An Artist’s Journey
Every artist begins with an undeniable compulsion to create: a head full of ideas and images that want to be expressed. As we work to develop the skills needed to bring our work into the realm of “fine art,” we also begin to find our voice with regards to our chosen subject matter and style of painting.
While I experimented and learned, I found that faces and figures are what calls to me most.
Figurative Work
All of my work begins with high technical proficiency and beauty. With that in place, my use of classical symbolism mixed with contemporary settings bring together the ideas in the stories I am telling.
This work often reflects things that I have been experiencing at the time the work is created. I find inspiration in literature, lyrics and legends (fairy tales and other mythology from cultures around the world). My titles often are hints that point to its meaning to me.
Once a piece of art is sent into the world, it takes on a life of its own, and may mean something different to each person. This is one of the things I love so much about visual art, and what makes it so meaningful and relevant across all time periods and for all people.
Commissioned Portraits: Legacy, Heritage
I love to tell stories. I love history. And so the creation of portraiture gives me the rare opportunity to step into the role of someone who chronicles moments in time, that will then last for many generations to enjoy.
I often tell my portrait clients, “How amazing is it that your great-great granddaughter could have this hanging in her home?” A portrait is in fact a gift to many generations as well as for the present time.
The equestrian work has grown out of a life-long love of all things horses! From my early childhood, riding horses on my cousin’s farm and reading every horse story I could get my hands on; to choosing a college that had a horse farm and learning to ride properly; to spending summers as the head wrangler at a camp that was a working ranch, I spent many years in the company of these magnificent animals. It is such a joy to now incorporate that love with my passion for art.
